| Day 1,
Thursday, June 2 San Francisco to Sacramento Don't sweat the details The plan: start at the Golden Gate Bridge, ride for about a mile through the park and take the 45-minute ferry ride to Vallejo and then really ride. Since we were staying at a Wyndham hotel in Pleasanton, it was going to be a 90-minute drive to the Golden Gate Bridge, just to say we started there. So we drove directly to Vallejo and got going. I bought maps from the American Cycling Association and they are detailed and keep bicyclists off main roads. The problem is they are detailed with lots of turns, which means I needed to pay closer attention. We made a couple of wrong turns and spent a good deal of time looking at the maps. Our support van is being driven by Dan's mother, Dottie, and she also had trouble with the maps. So we spent a good deal of time trying to find the van. We pulled into Davis, a nice college town and stopped at our first bike shop. My tire pump had broken while loading it into the car, so we stopped to get a new hose for it. They had just what we needed. Dan's bike computer wasn't working and Nicole didn't have one, so we got them each one. When we put them on at night, I couldn't get Nicole's to work and Dan's was missing a crucial part. I finally got Nicole's working in the morning but we sent Dottie back to Davis to return the unusable one. There seems to be only one way to get into Sacramento from San Francisco
and that is on I-80. Just as you are heading into Sacramento you
go over a long causeway. Fortunately someone was smart enough to put a
bike lane on the causeway. Unfortunately, Dottie got confused by the map
and didn't realize we were pedaling along I-80, so she thought there
must be another route. We were sitting in downtown Sacramento waiting
when she finally arrived. |
Nicole let the world know about our ride by writting on the van windows.
